Nancy Ciolek | Senior Designer

Nancy Ciolek is an Associate Professor in the School of Design at Rochester Institute of Technology and currently teaches graduate courses in the Visual Communication Design program. Her strengths include typography, symbol and icon design, experiential design, information design, and integration of interactive and digital media within graphic design. With over 30 years of experience in graphic design, Professor Ciolek served as a design consultant for ICS, Inc., an international innovation consulting firm based in Rochester, NY. ICS serves an international client base, including Credit Suisse, US Army, Center for Creative Leadership, Raytheon, United Health Care, Hallmark and many others. Recent freelance includes work for RIT Press and print work for the non-profit group Managing Autism Together Today. Professor Ciolek previously worked as a designer at James Bare Design, The Williams Agency, and St. Mary of the Woods College in Indiana. Her work has been published in Contemporary Masterworks by St. James Press (UK), IDS Publishing/Media 2005 (online), and in the SIGGRAPH 2006 conference proceedings; and has presented at the Kern Conference, the UCDA Design Education Summits, SIGGRAPH, and TypeCon. She has been a conference program reviewer for UCDA and the Taiwan Association of Digital Media Design international conference. She has also been an invited guest speaker and given workshops at various conferences and universities. January 2017 saw the publishing of Nancy Ciolek’s co-written and designed book Digital Design in Action: Creative Solutions for Designers from Taylor & Francis/CRC Press. Previous academic positions and consulting include Administrative Chair for the School of Design, Graduate Program Chair for MFA Computer Graphics Design, Program Chair for BFA Graphic Design, education consultant for the Departments of Higher Education for the states of New York and Connecticut, promotion and tenure reviewer for the University of Evansville in Indiana, and Queens College in NY. As well as an academic program reviewer for Genesee Community College and Alfred State College. Nancy’s professional association memberships include UCDA (University & College Designers Association), and SOTA (Society of Typographic Arts). Also, a former member of ACM SIGGRAPH Education Committee and AIGA. She is listed in Marquis Who’s Who in Higher Education. Professor Ciolek served as interim president of the non-profit organization DEAAF (Deaf Education and Arts for African Families), and currently serves on the advisory board for Pennsylvania College of Technology (an affiliate of Penn State), and UCDA Education advisory committee.
